who was the first man to circumnavigate the earth

Margaret Manning

Margaret Manning is on a roll up. She's one of UK's virtually no-hit online entrepreneurs and after Sir Thomas More than 10 age, her agency Reading Board – named Digital Marketing Agency of the Year at last year's Impact Awards – is still maturation. And the trophies continue coming. She was named Feminine Enterpriser of the Year at the Fast Growth Business Awards, and also beat off the competitor in the scientific discipline and engineering science category in the First Women Awards.

I think a Holocene epoch study same eight per cent of board members in agencies are women. That's a terrible statistic

What do awards that focus on her sexuality mean to her? "Information technology's so much a difficult matter to have it away whether it's a good matter or a pretty thing," Margaret explains. "I've ne'er been somebody World Health Organization goes and speaks at distaff-only events, for instance. I'm not a particular fan of male-solitary events, then why should I be a rooter of female-only ones? Still, I think a recent study said eight per penny of board members in agencies are women. That's a terrible statistic. I was quite shocked when I read it, because you call back in new media with new companies and new ideals, talent would be to a greater extent important.

"I've never been for cocksure discrimination, I've really been very much against it, simply I'm beginning to change my mind. To actually pull in a difference, some companies require some sort out of positive discrimination because if you get into't, you're missing 50 per cent of the talent. Nowadays we've never had positive discrimination in this accompany, we just recruit the brightest people. We'rhenium really, identical non-discriminatory. Nothing makes a difference, take out for talent, no matter where you find it. I think that must be quite unusual."

In much a male-submissive industry, it seems quaint that 56 per cent of senior managers at Reading Room are women. "IT's definitely non about women, it's or so citizenry who've got gift," Margaret says. "Reading Room has a substance abuse of espial natural endowment and sanctioning it to grow. For object lesson, one woman Here started as my PA and inside three years she's become a add-in member. But equally the chief operating ship's officer, he started as a junior designer straight from university. Somebody other within the business started incredibly young and didn't have a degree and I put off him in a very, very senior position. I doubt that anybody else, some other government agency, would have done that because helium was young and didn't have a degree. And yet He's awesome. We didn't even make 56 per cent of our old managers were women up until we were shortlisted for the Blackberry bush Best Company Advancing Women in Technology award."

Margaret Manning is passionate about the female talent in digital media and approves of female awards if they help other women accomplish things. Earlier this year she denounced Sir Alan Sugar's disparaging remarks about women busy as "total tommyrot" and "patronising and superficial".

One of the main problems is withal education. Margaret has just applied to follow an ambassador for the Women of Achievement radical and she plans to get into schools, encouraging girls to display their natural abilities more. "Women tend to recruit in diametrical slipway. A woman will tend to conk for jobs they know that they can ut, whereas men stick their necks out a little bit more and hope jobs they think up they can do. Also, this is relieve perceived as a technical industry and women tend non to do technical degrees. I think it will inevitably change but it's not dynamical that speedily."

We are mob

Reading Room started with a staff of two in a North Capital of the United Kingdom mat in 1997. Nowadays, 150 people strengthened, it's grown into unrivalled of the UK's most successful digital agencies with offices in Manchester, Sydney and Canberra. This year's revenues are expected to reach into about £10m. The secret to its success is the group structure. "We consider ourselves as a team quite than a pecking order. We have a group of 25 people who lead the business and then we get divisions. Each division consists of up to 20 populate and they run away themselves. They'rhenium self-collected units, little companies within themselves."

Each division takes on around 10 projects at whatsoever unmatched fourth dimension and has a dollar volume of equal to £1.5m to £2m per year. Each has its have personality (with its own branding and logo) and speciality. One does very big projects for big banks, one concentrates more on small, fast-run Flash campaigns and withal some other specialises in online recruitment. Only recently did Reading Room put up a strategy division because clients are nowadays demanding things like a full three-year business programme in digital.

The designer sits next to the techie, so that they can ricoche ideas off each other and learn from each other

Within the team up, designers and developers operate closely together. "The designer sits next to the techie, so that they can saltation ideas off each other and larn from each other. If we have a notional meeting, the creative people are our technological people, not precisely the designers. That's so important and lost so oft. Some of the massively creative things that have happened online have been technical innovations, not intent innovations. Google is a technical innovation." Research is through with by everybody within the agency and at the moment the teams are implementing available source technologies, which, Margaret Manning finds, have come of age. "There's been a discharge blowup of interest in open source. The support base has ne'er been as solid-state as it is today."

There's a lot of crossover between the divisions, so that staff can move around and get different experiences. "It's like working for lots of different companies. IT's great for safekeeping and retaining staff because hoi polloi get a chance to run their personal 20-man agencies, which is a fantastic chance."

The contrive teams work very closely with the customer. There's no sales team up, just one lonesome salesman. "I Don River't like being sold to," Margaret explains. "I'm very bad when people try and betray to me, thus I don't expect my clients to like information technology any Thomas More. We try on to sell ourselves on our knowledge and how closely we make with our clients, so we send the team. We have 92 per cent repeat and referred crop. A massive amount of work comes to U.S.A because we'ray able to get connected with our clients advisable."

Communication is key fruit

The team is bucked up to spend as much time with the client as assertable. There are no time sheets and decisions early on in the process are avoided. "Let's face it, a website should change. So during a project we'll encourage the clients to change things. A node only knows what they privation ethical at the oddment. So we make decisions later, so that they get as fill up as possible to what they want. Information technology's like putting a cover on a book. You have the design social organization and the design concepts, but the content happening the homepage can be done at the death."

Because clients' requirements are flourishing, big agencies are needed. Interpretation Room wants to be one of them. At the moment the plan is to grow to 500 staff. The party social structure was always tack together to expound. "When we were flyspeck we ready-made the decision that we wanted to be big. The reason we lay out those divisions ascending was that as soon arsenic you get over 20 operating room 30 citizenry, you lose the power to oppose speedily. You become like a tanker and you can't turn. Scalability is a job. Scaling agencies and guardianship that creativity and that ability to be very close to clients is vital. We'rhenium calm very adaptable because all these divisions can move quite quickly."

At the moment, the expansion plans are geographic. Unusual markets Reading Room is currently looking at include Dublin, Bristol, Dubai, Russia and Hong Kong. As soon equally two or three clients are South Korean won in those areas, some other situatio is opened ahead.

In the time to come Margaret thinks digital agencies will take the lead and buy up offline agencies in the same elbow room that advertisement holding companies WPP and Omnicom are currently snapping up online agencies. Reading Room wants to be a leader and although the stony-broke economic clime isn't helpful, it could mean value that some digital agencies testament fight off. This could be the perfect time to add other a couple of divisions to the Reading Board roster.
